As a key member of our wider NZ technical design team, we are looking for an experienced engineering professional to join our busy Transport Services team based in our Penrose Depot. We’re on the lookout for an individual for the role of Engineering Team Lead with experience in one (or more) of the following fields:

  • Pavement Design
  • Civil/Structures Design
  • Geometric Design
  • Drainage Design

The primary responsibility for this position is to lead the Penrose Technical Services Team providing Engineering solutions and management of specific design projects, delivering on contract requirements.

This position will form part of the National Technical Services Leadership Group, and will include liaison with other senior technical professionals and senior management within the company as well as acting as a point of contact for clients in the Northern Region with regards to managing delivery of design packages, construction specifications as well as quality management.

About you
You’ll be someone who is keen to roll up their sleeves to work "hands on" in collaboration with the wider Downer operation and the Technical Services Leadership Team who operate in a national oversight capacity.  You’ll also be happy to involve construction teams right from the conceptualisation of a new design as well as engaging technical experts throughout the business.

With excellent communication skills, you’ll enjoy working with customers, and strive to enhance your and our credibility by fostering trusted relationships.

You’ll ideally bring at 10 years’ experience in a pavement, civil, geometric or drainage design discipline, as well as some (if not all) of the following:

  • BE – Civil Engineering, or equivalent experience/qualification
  • CPEng or qualifications and experience sufficient to achieve this in the next year
  • Significant technical design experience
  • Proven ability in design management to deliver outputs on time and within budget
  • The ability and willingness to undertake peer reviews of design reports, ITP’s and specifications to maintain quality and facilitate the development of the author
  • Proven willingness and capability to learn as well as developing a team and maintaining professional acumen
  • Proven problem solving and negotiation skills

You’ll also have a positive attitude and commitment to providing a high quality of service to internal and external physical delivery partners, along with strong interpersonal skills (to be applied to all internal and external relationships).  Naturally a positive attitude and commitment to providing a high quality of service to internal and external physical delivery partners will stand you in good stead and of course good knowledge of current NZ design codes and construction guidelines is a must.

Due to the nature of scope of this role, some travel around NZ will be required.
