Here at Downer we view every cadet as a potential leader.  In fact some of your current leaders started their careers as cadet, this is a great opportunity to earn while you learn and grow your career.

We are keen to hear from you if you are:

  • Interested in commencing study towards their Diploma in Civil Engineering (NZDE) whilst working to obtain practical knowledge


  • Currently in your final year of study of the Diploma in Civil Engineering (NZDE) and will be ready to start full time work in 2021.


  • An experienced tradespeople who is keen to change careers and start a Diploma in Civil Engineering

You’ll bring with you some relevant work experience (casual or summer is ok) in contracting / construction, but most importantly you’ll come with a proven willingness and capability to learn.

You’ll also display the following key attributes:

  • Ability to work independently and use your initiative
  • Agile thinking with strong problem solving ability
  • Innovative and creative, with a solutions focus
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work alongside a diverse range of people
  • Are committed to excellence, and health and safety

A full class 1 Driver's Licence is essential and all applicants must have the legal right to work in New Zealand in order to be eligible for our programme.

About being a Downer Cadet 
Our programme takes between 2.6 to 4 years to complete, depending on your academic status at time of commencing on the programme.  We have programme managers who oversee and support cadet progress throughout to support you, as well as being allocated a mentor to support study and work placement learning.

This programme offers a structured rotation plan that ensures a full range of roading and construction knowledge and experiences.

You’ll also have regular meetings to share experiences with other cadets and network with business managers.  We’ll also provide financial and leave allocation to support academic achievement and of course once you’ve completed the programme you’ll get placement in an entry-level engineering role.
