About the Opportunity:

Due to an internal promotion, we have an opportunity for a Senior Commercial Manager to join our New Business & Commercial to join the Downer New Zealand family. The Senior Commercial Manager is a key leadership role in the New Business & Commercial team. The role is accountable for leading a team to provide commercial, contractual and risk management expertise to enhance business performance and support sustainable customer relationships. The role is a key contributor to assist in the development and implementation of the Downer Utilities business strategy and will also support wider DNZ strategic and commercial initiatives. The Senior Commercial Manager is responsible for both upstream and downstream commercial and contractual advice to the Utilities business, with a focus on our projects work.


This role reports to the GM New Business & Commercial, Utilities and will also work closely as a key advisor to the GM Utilities Major Projects.

Day to day you will:

  • Optimise commercial outcomes and mitigate risk for Downer, support delivery of contractual commitments to customers, and support resolution of issues.
  • Collaborate with other Commercial leads across Downer to optimise consistency, collaboration, resource sharing, and people growth and development
  • Oversee the resource management and appropriate allocation of work to the Utilities Projects Commercial team, together with organisation of and reporting accurately on activity
  • Support Utilities with full implementation of and adherence to the Downer Standard for Opportunity & Bid Management, Delivery Management Standards and Commercial and Legal Standards
  • Explore and implement value-adds for the overall Utilities sector.
  • Provide commercial and contractual expertise to improve business performance of Utilities Projects, including reviewing tenders, advising on new business commercial strategies, helping resolve issues arising on operational contracts and managing variations, disputes and claims.
  • Promoting consistency and accuracy with regards to forecasting, cashflow and predictability of project outcomes.


About you:

Ideally you will have experience in a similar role in a large scale, services-based business.

  • You are able to demonstrate excellent people leadership skills including a total commitment to creating a Zero Harm workplace
  • You have financial and commercial acumen to deliver positive results and achieve strategic targets
  • You’ve delivered strong customer and commercial focuses, including the ability to identify solutions that add customer value and deliver returns
  • Using your commercial/business acumen you can demonstrate your influencing and negotiating skills at a senior level. This is proven through your ability to understand a complex and multifaceted business environment.
  • You have the ability to demonstrate your collaborative approach to working within and across multi-functional teams (such as Estimating, Bid Management and Technical Standards leaders) from different parts of a business. In conjunction with; Intellectual horsepower, timely decision making, managing multiple priorities, and dealing comfortably with concepts and complexities.
  • You are a versatile learner with a high level of personal resilience. You are able to perform in a stable manner under pressure and are self-aware and focused on self-improvement.
