We have a position available for an Electrical Engineer to be based at our East Preston Tram Depot in Victoria.

Downer has been delivering a five-year program of life extension refurbishment works for more than 400 trams from Melbourne’s iconic Yarra Trams fleet since 2018.
The Victorian Government ordered 65 High Capacity Metro Trains and will deliver five new trains to service the Melbourne Airport Rail Link. The trains are being delivered with over 60 percent local content and the project has created over 1,100 new jobs including over 100 long-term maintenance jobs. It is being delivered by the Evolution Rail consortium comprising Downer, CRRC Changchun and Plenary.
About the role
This role is for production support at the East Preston Tram Depot, Melbourne. The role is responsible for the preparation of engineering specifications, engineering reports, electrical calculations, design layouts, production drawings and cost estimates. It also defines the development of reference designs for new electrical systems and upgrades to be incorporated into a design baseline. The role also requires development of integration plans for rail vehicles and assurance of new systems and operating methodologies.
The Electrical Engineer will support multiple activities across the delivery lifecycle, this includes producing safe, compliant, reliable and cost-effective designs; supporting production, maintenance and test & commissioning with timely engineering advice and concessions; identification of the root cause of problems across the fleet; managing technical risks and opportunities with internal stakeholders.
The role is part of a larger Electrical Engineering team within RTS which provides further support to other Electrical Engineers working on projects in Victoria, NSW and QLD.
In this role you will be encouraged and supported to become chartered with the Engineer’s Australia chartered program.
Role requirements
Develops new approaches, methods, or technologies.
Conduct design and analysis of rail vehicle electrical components and systems.
Conduct design process reviews.
Develop Engineering Change Requests.
Raise Engineering Instructions.
Ensure all designs comply with contractual requirements, specifications and standards. Undertake verification activities to confirm and document compliance to contract specification requirements.
Liaise with planners and assist in the development of Project Design Schedules. Ensure that work in area of responsibility is performed in a timely manner in accordance with the schedule.
Review suppliers design and work with them to ensure product supplied meets specification requirements.
Liaise with production engineers and production personnel associated with the manufacturing of products. Be conscious of the tasks involved in manufacturing the product and ensure that designs are manufacturable.
Communicate with the Production Supervisor to ensure common goals are achieved.
Undertake preparation of engineering test procedures and test activities.
Ensure that designs are optimized to minimize overall cost and assess product cost in relation to project budgets during the design process.
Diagnose and correct failures and design deficiencies in existing rail vehicles.
Provide technical direction to product service and support personnel.
Promotes and supports Safety Assurance activities and outcomes consistent with Rail Safety National Law.
Essential skills and experience
Degree qualifications – Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
Be registered or working towards becoming registered on the National Engineering Register.
Membership of a relevant professional institution, such as Engineers Australia.
5 years relevant experience in rollingstock, rail vehicle or power electronic design or equivalent.
Electrical simulation experience.
Safety Assurance experience.
Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to conduct detailed investigations and provide clear and decisive results and written reports.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide rapid and effective engineering support to management and trade staff.
Demonstrates individual commitment by proactively leading and participating in best practice Zero Harm.
Experience with customer interfacing and commercial acumen.
Experience in production support: day-to-day problem solving, process improvements and lean processes.
Experience with programming and customising Programmable Logic Controllers.
Experience in a rail manufacturing or heavy industry maintenance environment, or similar.
