The Principal Design Engineer– Structures shall be Chartered with Engineers NZ or body recognised by EngNZ. He/she will work closely with National Structures Engineering Lead and internal clients (including General Managers and Project Managers), ensuring through design, oversight and review that technical knowledge is applied to manage and/or execute the investigation and design of a range of Structures projects.
About the role The role will work closely with customers and physical works staff to identify and capture design/build opportunities and to provide the design input necessary to deliver cost effective innovative solutions. The Principal Design Engineer - Structures will be responsible for providing specialised detailed Structures/Temporary Works engineering knowledge to operations teams on projects and the New Business team through the tender process.
The position forms part of the wider Downer Engineering and Optimisation Community. You will therefore work closely with and provide oversight to other technical experts nationally and provide support to physical works staff to meet customer needs and be an integral member of the Downer team. While primarily servicing the Transport Business line the Principal Design Engineer – Structures will raise the profile of the Structures team internally to deliver across a range of projects and business units including Transport Projects, Major Projects, Hawkins, and Facilities Services and Utilities (FS&U).
The Principal Design Engineer – Structures shall provide technical structural engineering design & support to the business, enhancing Downer’s service offering to clients and developing the operations business. You will also actively mentor and coach junior and intermediate members of the Structures Team to share knowledge and grow the capabilities of the team.
Remuneration: Principal Design Engineer – Structures = $150k - $170k (inclusive of vehicle package)
About you You’ll need to be someone who is keen to roll up their sleeves to work "hands on" in collaboration with the wider Downer business; you will be happy to involve construction teams right from the conceptualisation of a new design. You will have excellent communication skills, enjoy working with customers, and strive to enhance your and our credibility by fostering trusted relationships.
You may be experienced in working on the Contractor side of projects or be a Senior Consultant engineer looking for a new direction. You will also need;
It is necessary to have:
BE (Civil) or other relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering
Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng).
Member or Fellow of Engineers New Zealand (MEngNZ or FEngNZ)
+10 years’ experience in Structures Engineer
It is desirable to have:
Specialist experience in one or more technical engineering disciplines including structural engineering
Proven willingness and capability to learn
Strong problem-solving skills
Good written and oral communication skills
A strong track record that clearly demonstrates leadership behaviours that empower others to make decisions, deliver and succeed.
A positive attitude and commitment to providing a high quality of service
Skilled in relevant technical software and systems as well as word processing, spread-sheeting and other general computer software
A full class 1 Driver’s Licence
